On my visit to Trader Joe’s, I couldn’t resist picking up a bag of gummies shaped like penguins. I got lured in by the cute cartoon on the packaging with the cool blue color. Maybe it was some subconscious need to get away from the summer heat.

They’re a little different from gummy bears because the penguin’s little round bellies are made up of a flavored gel that oozes out when you bite into it.

But you know something? They don’t really look like penguins. They look more like Ronald McDonald’s friend, Grimace.

Don’t you think?

During my health nut phase, I ate a lot of peanut butter and apples as my healthy snack. But one day I was reaching for the peanut butter in the pantry and I saw the Nutella jar sitting innocently right next to it. Hmm, I thought. I slathered on the Nutella and it was even better than I imagined. You would be surprised how well they go together. Try it! You can use any apples you’d like but so far I’m sticking to my favorite, the Fuji apple. The one above as you can tell are Granny Smith apples but it didn’t wow me like the Fuji did. I thought the tartness would complement the Nutella but the sweetness of the Fuji apple fits much better.

And if you’re curious about the calories, it has the same amount as reduced fat peanut butter but with more sugar (of course) and less vitamins. But we don’t really care about that stuff, right?

One more tip: stir in a small spoonful of Nutella in your oatmeal. Hmm-mmm! Dessert for breakfast.

When my parents asked what I wanted from their trip to Hong Kong, I only had one request: green tea Kit Kats. I knew my chances were slim since they really come from Japan but I was hopeful. They’re close enough, right? My mom couldn’t find them but being the mom that she is, she didn’t disappoint and came back instead with three different kinds of Kit Kats.

Apparently there is an endless list of Kit Kat flavors out there and these are just some of them: lemon chocolate, cookies & chocolate, and sesame-glazed potato.

I wasn’t too excited about trying the lemon chocolate but this one had a nice flavor. Maybe it was the white chocolate, but it didn’t have that overwhelming tang that I was expecting. It was subtle and sweet. As you can tell from the packaging, this flavor was made especially for Valentine’s Day. Not really sure how lemons and love are connected. Maybe for your sweet-tart? (Groan.)

The cookies and chocolate was, of course, nothing spectacular. How does it taste? Let me tell you a story. One day the cookie half of an Oreo wondered what it would be like to be a filling. He smooshed himself into crumbly bits and then jumped inside a Kit Kat bar. The end.

Now, the sesame-glazed potato boggles my mind. I still haven’t figured it out before and after I found out what the flavor was. I do know that it’s trying to mess with my tastebuds. The sesame flavor is there but I am not sure if it’s a potato or a sweet potato. There’s a hint of saltiness and it has a very Asian flavor. If you’ve ever had any type of Asian snacks, the taste would be very familiar to you. That probably doesn’t help but this one is worth trying if you have the chance to. I still ate it all and it was pretty good. But really, what is a sesame-glazed potato anyway? Maybe I need to try the real thing first.
